Description
After a seven-week trial, the longest murder trial in Wisconsin history, on March 30, 1962, a jury found each of the three appellants, Lawrence Nutley, Richard M. Nickl, and William Welter, guilty of murder in the first degree and attempted murder, on the basis of their respective conduct during an episode occurring on August 21, 1961, in the village of Lake Delton in Sauk county, Wisconsin, in which one police officer, James Jantz, was shot and killed, and another officer, Eugene Lee Kohl, was shot and seriously wounded. The trial court entered a judgment of guilty and sentenced each appellant to life imprisonment for first-degree murder and to a term of thirty years for attempted murder, the terms of appellants Welter and Nickl to run consecutively, and the terms of appellant Nutley to run concurrently. The appellant Welter appeals the judgments of conviction and sentence. The appellants Nutley and Nickl appeal from their judgments of conviction and sentence and from the orders of the trial court denying their respective motions for a new trial.
